Block Workout is one of London’s first street gyms, built through the philosophy of ex-gang member, Terroll Lewis. Targeting those young men and women in our community, who want to use working out as a path away from trouble or an opportunity to do something more inspiring and rewarding than is on offer to them as teenagers today. I know for some the gym was a place to find their first positive male role model.

Alongside a new sea of yoga and gym advertising in Brixton at the time, the Champion Agency wanted spray-stencilled posters for the gym. They wanted images that local kids could identify with and be intrigued by. My hunt was to find a sense of a normal kid being a transcendent hero, like a Brixton ‘Rocky’.

I thought the gym’s upcoming championship would be the most likely place to capture this. So, on a cold winter morning, coated in that silver lemon light we shot with this really solid group.
